2004 Grant Recipients

Caroline Hall - University of Leeds
A Ph.D. student, Caroline works to promote social justice within the wider Anglican Church and the communities it serves.

Andrew Francis Flowers - University of Connecticut
Working on Masters in Sociology, Andrew is active in queer and transgendered politics.

Ashley Diener -  San Francisco State University
Ashley plans to use a degree in Human Sexuality studies to create greater access to and equality within health care.

Braden Chapman - University of Southern Maine
A grassroots activist in rural Maine lost his family when they learned of his sexual orientation. Braden creates and produces theater accessible to the larger community while working for Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity at the University of Southern Maine.

Christopher Lee Dial - Cornell University
Christopher plans to use his education to open a tuition free boarding school for teens who are homeless or  who live in abusive homes.

Eileen M. Harrington - Graduate Theological Union
Eileen is pursing a Ph.D. to teach on theological issues of globalization, social and ecological justice, and women's issues

Yvette Rivera -  University of California Santa Cruz
Yvette founded a non-profit organization called 3T's: Teens Teaching Teens, a program promoting health education to grades K-12.  Teens Teaching Teens promotes education and self-esteem for low income students.

In Hui Lee -  California Institute of Integral Studies
An activist from South Korea, In Hui Lee was expelled from university in her home country for organizing student protests.  In Hui Lee works to prevent domestic violence within the Korean community.

Jane Carol Redmont - Graduate Theological Union
A author, Jane is writing a series on emerging theologians and other thinkers.  Jane says "I try to use my writing gifts to lift up the lives and voices of those who don't get noticed by the mainstream books and media."

Khristian Kemp-DeLisser - University of Vermont 
Khristian serves on the board of Board of R.U.1.2?, a community center in rural Vermont..  Khristian helped form a group that meets regularly to discuss racism, homophobia and oppression and create innovative ways to address social problems.

Heather Katrina Hazen - University of California Santa Cruz
Heather was raised in foster care and is dedicated to using her education to create support for abused and neglected children in foster care.

Lauren Stower -  University of California Santa Cruz
Lauren is an environmental activist who plans to use her studies to work with disadvantaged women and promote change within the prison system.

Megan Marie Rohrer - Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary
Megan is the founder of the Coalition for Social Justice, an organization in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Megan is passionate about working with the poor and homeless.

Lauri Owen -  University of California, Berkeley
Lauri plans to use her law degree to help women coping with domestic violence and rape while educating lawmakers about to women's issues.

Charles A. Towsley, Jr.-  University of Pennsylvania
Charles works to with HIV positive people in Philadelphia.  Charles is active in MANNA,  Action AIDS, Gay Switchboard of Philadelphia and Philly PAWS.

Rebecca Renfro - University of California, Berkeley
A teenager mother, Rebecca wants to use her education to function as a child advocate and work with pregnant teens.

Karen Nelson Villanueva - California Institute of Integral Studies
A former Peace Corps volunteer, Karen is pursuing a Ph.D. and hopes to provide counseling services for minority and disenfranchised students.

Steven Charles Harbaugh - Kent State University
Steven plans to become a journalist and use his education to promote equal and fair reporting.

Shannon Kane Vanderpol - Jesuit School of Theology
Returning from nine years working with HIV impacted populations Kenya, Shannon is active in providing services to people living with HIV. 

Susan Gonzalez - New College of California School of Law
Active in the Rainbow Lambda Society for the Deaf, Communication Access Network and Deaf Visual and Performing Artists, Susan will use her law degree to advocate for and Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people

Nickolas Jakob McDaniel - Hartnell Community College
Nikolas is studying to become a  Board Certified Sex Therapist (BST) and plans to specialize in gender issues, transgenderism/transsexualism, and provide services to victims of childhood sexual abuse.

Raquel Trinidad - University of California Santa Cruz
Raquel works with the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador and Office of the Americas.  Raquel plans to use her education to promote union and workers' rights.

Wen-Hua Yang - New York University
Wen-Hua is active with New York Asian Womens Center and the National Advocates for Pregnant Women.  Wen-Hua intends to use a degree in public service to continue work in the non-profit sector as an advocate for human rights.

Christopher Brian Logan – New College of California – Christopher is active in promoting adoption rights for gays and lesbians.

Kaira Espinoza – San Francisco State University – Kaira works to bring change for disadvantaged youth by creating new empowerment programs and improved education.

Saron Anglon – New College of California – Saron is working toward teaching credential and plans to work in poor and migrant communities.

Casey Magee – Hunter College School of Social Work – Casey provides tutoring and mentoring for children living in public housing.

Sandra Peterson – New College of California – Sandra helps incarcerated youth and prisoners work to create brighter futures after their release.

Patricia Cotter – California State University, Chico – Patricia advocates for environmental change and protection for farm workers.

Daniel Schweitzer – UC Hastings, College of Law – Daniel is studying law with the goal of helping gays and lesbians achieve legal parity with their heterosexual counterparts.

Blake Arnall – Pacific School of Religion – Blake is studying to be a Quaker chaplain and plans to work in poor and marginalized communities.

Christopher Lee Dial – Cornell University – Chistopher teaches about understanding gender, racial and class identity and the role they play in social and economic justice.

Suemyra Shah – University of California, Berkeley – Suemyra is studying to become an international human rights lawyer and advocate for human rights.

Rachel Elizabeth Goss – Northern Arizona University - Rachel works with GLBT youth to increase tolerance and teach peace.

Matt Wolf – New York University, New York, NY – a documentary filmmaker highlighting economic and social issues; 

Kyle Celio – San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA  - focused on education and advocacy for the poor in San Francisco’s Chinatown; 

David Gant – Pacific School of Religion, Oakland, CA – bringing economic justice through faith-based community building; 

Christopher Brian Logan – New College of California, San Francisco, CA – studying to provide marriage and family counseling for those with HIV; 

Angelito Angeles – New College of California, Lose Angeles, CA – a longtime GLBT activist working to bring her life experience into the classroom as a teacher; 

Clemency Wings – Sonoma State University, Sebastopol, CA – focused on teaching English to impoverished migrant communities; 

Jackie Phillip Saxon – Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ – working to become a teacher for economically impoverished districts;
